An easy read that’s perfect for Spooky Season.

I really enjoyed this book, and I was immediately captivated by the chaos of it all. Brie stumbles upon her boss exorcising a coworker from a demon. And then she gets chased by one, which leads her and Luke to a road trip adventure in hell? That, I love! The premise is ridiculous and fun and exactly what I wanted.

The road trip through hell is where Mackenzie shines. She does a great job explaining the different US states as bureaucracies and the snippets of action kept me on edge the entire time. I loved that tension. Those scenes would be amazing in a TV show adaptation.

But then we hit the 50% mark and… insta-love? It came out of nowhere. There might’ve been a few “oh I was looking at him” moments, but it was hard to know what Luke actually thought of Brie because we’re stuck in single POV. So that dynamic kind of fell flat for me. And honestly? If you’d told me there wasn’t any spice in this book, I would’ve been totally fine with that. The romance didn’t need to be there, but since it was, it needed more “oomph”.

Here’s where I dock the star: Luke’s backstory kept shifting on me. I was genuinely whiplashed. Like dude, pick a lane. Why are you holding back the full truth from her? The inconsistency broke the trust I had in his character, and it made it hard for me to connect with him.

That said, if you’re looking for a fast, fun romcom read for Halloween, this is it. It’s exactly what it says on the tin: chaotic, spooky, and entertaining.

Thanks to Berkley and NetGalley for the ARC!
